Summary
BMW unveiled its new color changing vehicle wrap technology based on EReader ink with black, gray, and white color capabilities.
Black Gray White
Perfect for a bank heist escape, BMW announces it has developed a color-changing exterior wrap for automobiles. The technology uses E Ink most known for its use in EReaders. Each E Ink segment contains millions of microcapsules which are the thickness of a human hair. For now, the technology will just be able to change shades between black and white. Perhaps we will get RGB colors soon to become a rolling gaming pc case.
Thermal Efficiency
BMW says the technology can be used for controlling the temperature of the vehicle and increasing efficiency. Lighter white shades will be able to reflect sunlight and darker shades will absorb more light allowing the vehicle's climate control to work less. BMW says this will reduce vehicle emissions. Electrophoretic technology uses no energy to keep the chosen color state constant and is very efficient compared to displays or projectors.
Final Thoughts
This technology seems quite advanced and probably needs special care. It is BMW, which is one of the automotive innovators for tech. We shall see how long before the technology shows up on the street and what applications the color morphing tech will be used, but I can see myself rolling around town in an M4 pattern shifting like Rorschach's mask.
